Workshop for Puppet Artists, Dancers and Actors.
Come join the world of Wakka Wakka!  Learn to ”Buckaroo”, a bastardized version of traditional Japanese Bunraku developed by Norwegians and Americans in the Wakka ensemble. Hand and rod and table top puppetry with and without table. Why move a puppet or an object when you can move yourself?  The hands-on workshop is designed to explore the limitless possibilities within the limits of puppetry.

Wakka Wakka is a visual theatre company based in NYC and Norway.

Wakka Wakka has been honored with a 2013 Special Drama Desk Award for Sophisticated Puppetry and a 2011 Obie Award Grant.  In 2008, Wakka Wakka Productions was awarded a UNIMA Citation of Excellence for “Fabrik: The Legend of M. Rabinowitz.”  In addition, the company’s work has been nominated for four Drama Desk Awards (“FABRIK” for Unique Theatrical Experience and “Baby Universe” for Outstanding Direction of a Play, Outstanding Music in a Play, Outstanding Sound Design in a Play) and a Hewes Design Award for Puppet Design (Kirjan Waage, “FABRIK”).

Workshop leaders
Kirjan Waage and Gwendolyn Warnock are co-founders of Wakka Wakka. They have created, performed in, directed and designed all of Wakka Wakka’s past works.

Kirjan Waage was born in Haugesund, Norway. He is a graduate of the University of Bologna, Italy, where he studied puppet theatre under Professor Remo Melloni and also received a diploma from the University of Bologna’s Theatre School CIMES. He then moved to Paris to complete the two-year program and the Laboratory of Movement Studies (LEM) at Ecole Internationale de Theatre Jacques Lecoq. A self-taught puppet maker, he started building stuffed animals that later evolved into puppets.

Gwendolyn Warnock hails from Ohio, USA.  She graduated from Northwestern University (Performance Studies), and from the two-year program at Ecole Internationale de Theatre Jacques Lecoq in Paris. Gwendolyn was nominated (along with Mr. Waage) for a 2011 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Director of a Play for “Baby Universe: A Puppet Odyssey.” She has been an artist in residence at Princeton University and Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center, as well as a guest artist at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center for the National Puppetry Conference.
